Regents approve fiscal year 2027 unified appropriations request for Kansas public higher education system

(Topeka, Kan.) -  The Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) today approved a unified appropriations request for the state’s public higher education system for Fiscal Year 2027. The request would provide the system with $4.6 million less than was appropriated for higher education in Fiscal Year 2026.

The request includes $16.3 million in continued support from last fiscal year that was provided for student success initiatives. It also includes a resumption of funding for the Kansas Blueprint for Literacy, support for projects to address the future energy needs of Kansas, funding for Washburn University to address workforce development and an initiative to support Kansans who have some credit but no degree to return to finish a degree in support of the state’s future workforce needs.

“The Regents carefully evaluated our system’s needs and priorities and developed a request that meets those while remaining fiscally responsible,” said KBOR Chair Blake Benson. “The projects included in the system budget ask will help us provide Kansas students with outstanding educational opportunities and will facilitate our efforts to help grow the Kansas economy.”

Please see the Fiscal Year 2027 KBOR Unified Appropriations Request for additional details about the items included in the appropriations request.

The Regents’ strategic plan, Building a Future, guided the Board’s discussion and adoption of the appropriations request. Building a Future focuses the work of the Kansas public higher education system on helping Kansas families, supporting Kansas businesses and advancing the state’s economic prosperity.

The unified request will now be sent to the Governor’s budget office and to legislative fiscal staff.
